Briefly, in what way: For functionality or for ideology?

(A new thread would be a good idea for this one!)

My first impressions for the end result from a recent WinXP install was:

1: Mmmm, looks very spartan;
2: OMG, I've not yet got the anti-virus software installed!


Guess I'm spoilt on Linux by expecting a GByte or so of hundreds of apps
/included/ with the OS install rather than just having a 'bare bones' OS
installed.
