A colleague has been successful accessing local USB memory sticks using
LtspFS on his OpenSUSE LTSP server, but like you he had the same problem
with fixed sound level on the clients. I believe the volume can be set
manually in lts.conf, but it's not user adjustable. If you use amplified
speakers you can always use the volume control on them, and set a
reasonable maximum volume in lts.conf.
