Except in the case of wireless adapters, yes.

Perhaps it's because the most common hardware is more likely to be well
supported, all other things being equal, and there is often a
correlation between cheapest and most common.

In the case of wireless, my own theory is that the cheaper devices are
cheaper because they expect more to be done in the software (i.e., the
drivers) which means more software has to be written to support them.
All that could change a bit more quickly now the DeviceScape wireless
stack is in mainline.
