Richard,

Using "xhost +" will allow anyone to connect to your X server. If you have 
the appropriate firewalls in place then they can block access. "xhost 
+localhost" or "xhost +mymachine" is a tad safer. If you have ssh 
installed, then "ssh -Y partner at localhost" works completely well.
