[Nottingham] Disk conflagration

This isn't a Linux-related question, but you are such a helpful group
I thought you might be willing to answer it for me.

A friend of mine reported smoke emerging from her elderly computer. I
removed the hard disk, hoping to extract the data. On plugging the
disk into another computer it failed to start running, and there is a
burn on the visible circuit board on the underside of the disk. This
was probably the source of the smoke.

"Backup?" What's that?

I imagine that retrieving the data on the disk is possible but
expensive. Or possibly very expensive. Any ideas as to a ballpark
figure?

Thanks.

Mike
