[Nottingham] Broken ProFTP on Ubuntu

I am setting up an FTP server on my Ubuntu Server. I was trying
different packages (vsftpd and then proftpd) but started to run into
problems.

Stupidly I deleted the proftpd (script?) from init.d and now - naturally
- I cannot remove the package with apt-get.

Has anyone got any advise on how to cleanly remove the package from this
position?
