[Nottingham] Connecting to Ambit cablemodem

In the course of troubleshooting something lately, I needed to access the 
information pseudo-web pages on my cable modem.   The instructions were to 
point a browser at http://192.168.100.1 and log in.

From a Linux machine (connected via ethernet cable to the router, which is 
then connected to the cablemodem), this resulted in Firefox providing 
a 'cannot establish a connection to the server' message.   MSIE running 
within WINE also fails to connect. 

From a Windows machine, connected in the same way and also using Firefox, I 
get the log in screen as expected.  MSIE also gets the log in screen.

Anyone know how to get the Linux machine to do what the Windows machine is 
doing - and indeed why it doesn't in the first place?
