[Nottingham] Setting MySQL version compatibility?

OK, folks,

This is either a dumb question or it's not blindingly obviously in the
FAQs... (Or it's not a FAQ...) ...

The MySQL question is...

Given a MySQL 5.xx installation, is there a tweak so that it only
accepts MySQL 4.xx queries/instructions so that you can guarantee all
will work just the same on whatever 4.xx series MySQL?

And will a mysql_upgrade perform whatever magic is required upon the db
files from whatever version to the present version?

Or is it a case of it is easier downgrading to the respective version?
