It permits 'secure encrypted' connections between machines.

Unless you're deliberately running an ssh server, in which case you'll
already know about it, then you don't have that on.

Check to see if you have "sshd" running as a service. Or try:
netstat -lt
on a commandline and see if you see "ssh" anywhere.


The default install for such as (K)Ubuntu do not even install the
program for running an ssh server (sshd).
