Are you using the device "/dev/ttyS0" ? (Or whichever com port your
modem appears on...)

Not to be confused with any mice!

Have you got your serial terminal disconnected from it?

Do you need to specify any start-up AT commands to initialise the modem?

Do you need to reverse the polarity of the phone line connection?
Do you need the phone line plugged in?!
