Looks like a known problem with the latest SANE package for those
scanners. A fix is to downgrade to the previous version. Try the
instructions on:

Scanner support status for SANE is listed on:

http://www.sane-project.org/cgi-bin/driver.pl?manu=HP&model=Scanjet+&bus=any&v=&p=

which claims "complete" support. So, is this just a temporary bug
awaiting an update?
