The Medion laptop has a serious problem which exhibits itself in
crackling on the speakers sometimes followed by full system freezes
(sometimes temporary, sometimes permanent until poweroff) or failure
to boot (with no access to BIOS setup), and failure to "see" the
on-board sound device (in both XP and Linux), which can sometimes be
alleviated by gentle "twisting" of the body of the laptop (not
recommended!).

I expect there's some serious mainboard damage.
