The kernel doesn't use autoconf, that's a slight red herring.
Graham - I have had problems with compiling packaged kernels on suse
in the past. I've been trying to remember what caused them, but I
haven't had a eureka moment. My best guess so far is that you may have
a version of the kernel headers installed that conflicts with the
kernel you're trying to compile. That's a bit of a weak guess though!
