The message is more likely the standard one that monitors display when
they cannot accommodate the input frequencies.

It sounds to me as if the frequencies for the two monitors have been
confused and, if they accept different ranges, the primary is being
asked to use higher frequencies that the secondary can support.

Disconnect the 2nd monitor for now.

If you have the ability and are comfortable editing xorg configuration
examine "/etc/X11/xorg.conf" and check if any entries have been added of
the type:

Section Monitor
 ...
EndSection

If so, identify which is the current monitor and which is the secondary.
Look at the Screen section and identify which monitor is the primary and
which the secondary.

If you don't find sections like these then the system will be using
RandR auto-detection and configuration.

Look into the /var/log/Xorg.0.* saved logs of recent X sessions. Try to
find a log that was generated when the second monitor was connected and
you experienced the problem.

Reading it will describe all the detected frequencies, and those that X
applied to each monitor.

then figure out a way to correct it.
