Unfortunately not:

*simon at 106602-1004:~$ sudo umount /dev/sr1*
*simon at 106602-1004:~$ sudo mkfs.vfat /dev/sr1*
*mkfs.vfat 3.0.7 (24 Dec 2009)*
*mkfs.vfat: unable to open /dev/sr1*
*simon at 106602-1004:~$ *


I'm stumped.
