I can't help wondering why nobody has mentioned Tor, or similar.

Keep your wifi secure, run a Tor relay.
Open wifi, helps who exactly?
Run a Tor relay and you help many people around the world to gain safe
access to the internet. There are plenty of ways to secure your node so it
isn't abused too.

Just a thought, but IMO there are better ways to help freedom of speech than
an open wifi.
