More seriously and boring, try rsync to update the blocks for the
unzipped images? Counter-intuitive but that should be faster than
trying to work with the compressed (binary completely different)
lumps...

Check up on the rsync flags to make sure it does what you expect! You
can set the uncompressed changes to be compressed for the transfer...
