As for trusting downloads from the net...well...once has to draw a line
somewhere between practicality and paranoia.  I "trust" Canonical, so I
trust signed stuff from their repo.  I also "trust" certain PPAs after a
bit of digging around (e.g. Mozilla).  All-in-all, I trust how the F/OSS
world does things way, way more than I trust download some random .exe
from some random page.
