Sorry, I should have said.  It's a wireless Logitech MX620 optical mouse
(batteries are fully charged).  It does not work at all on glass, hence
the need for a mat.  The strange thing is, I can't see any muck or
anything on the pad.

Now I look, people are reporting it as a possible hardware or sftware
fault.  Only been affecting me for the past 6 months or so.  I shall set
about fiddling with things.
