Please define what you mean by "media centre". If you just want a
front-end to some files (either on the same PC or network) then XBMC is
as good a choice as any. The latest release (Eden) in pretty darn good
and I still have it running on my old xBox.

For recording, transcoding etc, you need something much more "server"
style like Myth (although XBMC can be used as a Myth front-end).

There are loads of others too. A simple browser and ownCloud could even
be used. Possibly even vanilla Ubuntu 12.04 and Unity.

If this is just going to be a front-end connected to a TV, or a desktop
PC which is sometimes used for media, I'd suggest XBMC.
For recording etc, Myth. I have never used Myth myself, but I have read
that it has become much easier to configure.

As for distros...there are XBMCbuntu, Mythbuntu and quite possibly
others. Whether or not it makes sense to use there or simply install
the application on to a mnore vanilla distro really depends on your
specific use case.
