General end users don't have a care in the world about privacy just look at the number of people who's facebook setting were set to the facebook's old standard of you don't need to even login to view someone's profile (I'm glad they changed that setting). but there are still a lot of profiles you can get a lot of details on just by login in e.g. I managed to find out where some lass who's a regular at the same cafe as me lived, her full name, and that she was an active member of a church in 5 mins with just her first name and the school she goes to

I've got no real issue with companies holding my data, per se.
I make a trade with Google with every day - my search history, browsing history, location data, mail contents, etc., etc., in exchange for "free" access to their web services. I don't mind this. I'm hoping that eventually, they'll know me well enough that adverts become useful content instead!
Conversely, I'm incensed by my company's data policy that allows them to hand over my data at will. Even when any legal restrictions are taken into account, the idea that the company could trade my data to some advantage without my direct, per-instance consent makes me really, really uneasy.
I don't have any problem with DPI if it's to my benefit (and I wouldn't call "keeping your bills low by reselling your data" a benefit), and if I have alternatives if I change my mind later.
Am I mad to worry that I'm not worried enough about privacy? I frequently feel that I'm in the minority on this issue.

Folks,
As deep packet inspection and abuse of the contents of all our
interaction with all and anything on the internet becomes ever more
intrusive...
Is this where smtp (email) and http (web browsing) both go the same way
of the old telnet of years ago?
https, vpns, and darknets, and everything-encryption all the way?
:-(
Where once we had Vikings and buccaneering Privateers, is this where we
now have Marketeers? :-(
Cheers,
Martin
