  sudo apt-get install --reinstall foo bar wibble

OR if you want to fiddle around in a more GUI-like environment:

  sudo aptitidue

Whack "?" to get at the help and find out the key ("\" is search)
I found aptitude easier for mucking around with optional dependencies.
