You're almost certainly right and "~/.config" is probably respected as
well, problem is there's not even a whiff of this "/etc/xdg" location in
the system settings dialog.
I guess it's hard with each project being a separate, moving part to
actually have an over-arching configuration management tool and I'll
hazard a guess it affect GNOME, Unity etc as well. Although
freedesktop.org does publish a coherent standard so....
A case of the level of choice/fragmentation in the F/OSS world lowering
the user experience?
Or just another case of PEBKAC? :-)
Knowing me, probably the latter!
