The 'proper' way is any one or all of:


An intelligent router;

Your own local DNS to give out the appropriate local IP address in the
first place;

Or to use an internal name for the device to connect internally in the
first place.


Select depending on availability and capability.


(For example for my own setup, I run my own DNS so that internal IP
addresses are served internally for my own services.)
