[Nottingham] [WALK] - RESCHEDULED - 20th Saturday - Lud's Church and the Roaches

The much anticipated rescheduling of July's walk which had to be aborted 
for <reasons>.

Apologies for somewhat short notice, will try to get September's out in 
plenty of time.

The jagged ridge of the Roaches (from the French for rocks - "roches") 
is one of the most popular outdoor locations in the Peak District 
National Park. It was here on the gritstone crags that the "€˜working 
class revolution" in climbing took place in the 1950s. There is also 
Doxey Pool which is said to be haunted by the ghost of a mermaid and 
inhabited by "Jenny Greenteeth", a hideous monster with green skin, long 
hair and sharp teeth, who grabs the ankles of anyone unfortunate enough 
to get too close, dragging them to a watery grave.

The area is also home to the the Arthurian tale of Sir Gawain and the 
Green Knight. According to the 14th-century poem, a knight on horseback 
cloaked entirely in green, gatecrashed a feast at Camelot and challenged 
the Knights of the Round Table. Sir Gawain rose to the challenge and 
beheaded the Green Knight but the latter retrieved his head and 
laughingly challenged Sir Gawain to meet with him again in a year's time 
at the Green Chapel. This has been identified as Lud'€™s Church, near 
the Roaches.

It's a bit of a food & drink desert I'm afraid, so bring a packed lunch 
etc. although there are a few eateries around e.g.

Kit: Sturdy boots/approach shoes, decent socks, waterproofs, lunch, 
water etc.
