That was an 'interesting' one:

crond had run amok with a busy-fail spawning a gazillion email
notifications!

A (not-so-quick):

service vixie-cron stop
killall -v -9 sendmail
killall -v -9 postdrop
killall -v -9 cron

eventually gave:

 11:59:47 up 846 days, 15:04,  2 users,
load average: 1.80, 440.00, 1873.24


And yae, all without a reboot and all without loss of data :-)
