As John has said, a PDF might contain a PNG but is not itself a PNG.
I did some quick searching and could find a few moans about embedded images but without the exact error message it's had to know (amusingly, some were complaining about Adobe not being able to read a PNG in side a PDF).

One thing I did find was that Evince can't always *print* the embedded image.

Are you using the latest version? If not, upgrade.

If you look-up the exact message, you might find a bug or an explanation/workaround.
Evince issues are here: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/evince/issues
(I couldn't find anything)

Failing that, try a different PDF reader. I like Okular, but I'm a dirty KDE user. :-)
You could also try opening them in your browser. Firefox, for example, can render PDFs.
