[Nottingham] [Help] Howto reinstall on apt + systemd!!!

Frustrating silly story but quick question:

I've had mariadb (mysql) running ok on a Raspbian system

Then I deleted /var/lib/mysql... (fun story)

Since then I've tried reinstalling, purging, installing, and even
removing mysql from /etc/passwd and /etc/group and:

apt totally fails to fully reinstall mariadb such that systemd can run
the thing...

No permutation seems to be able to get mysql back into /etc/passwd nor
regenerate a /var/lib/mysql.

The last attempt has been:

apt reinstall mariadb-client mariadb-server mariadb-server mysql-common

(apt systemd jokes come later)
