As light relief from the discussion of the pros and cons of AJAX  ;)  I want 
to thank sparkes and David Goodwin for their explanations of my problem with 
the PHP echo command.

I now understand why in order for the variables to be recognised in the two 
include files I need to refer to the files using a relative URL, as in 
'include/header.php', which is what I had found by trial and error but I did 
not know the reason.
