[Phpwm] unsigning a numeric variable

Is there a quicker functional way to unsign a numeric variable, apart from
squaring it then taking the square root of the resultant?

$startingval = -99999999;
echo $startingval . "<br>";
echo sqrt($startingval * $startingval);
