Well flash has sort of been replaced by flex now. So you might want to check
that out too.
But for actionscript I would highly recommend any of the Colin Mook books (

Apologies for the slightly off-topic post, it's still web development based
so I thought I could get away with it ;-)
I'm looking to learn the basics of programming in Flash. I've never done any
flash development before, where would be a good place to start? Can I use
Open Source development tools or will I need to purchase some form of Flash
