[Phpwm] Networking question

Maybe not the best place to pose a networking question, but would appreciate 
any help..

I've got Ubuntu running on my laptop and xp pro on my desktop. I'm writing 
code on both and would like to share files between them.

How do I go about connecting them with a crossover cable?

Any ideas?
