On a similar vein, we (Pale Purple) have written an application which
allows for the upload of files (therefore avoiding SMTP etc) with
defined addresses and support for invites. It's web based, and could
therefore run securely over SSL.
It requires users to login (and can integrate with AD), but they can
send 'invites' out to others to upload a file for them.
There's also a full audit trail.
