Dear all,

Seeing how your list-admin has failed to organise a talk (so far), you
may want to consider the following (in addition, or instead)

Thanks
David

Hello David,

This is probably well off topic but it does involve software development
and I can promise that PHP and MySQL will get a mention! There will be
a buffet available and a bar so if you are still short of a May event
you might like to publicise the following to the PHPWM mailing list.

BCS Birmingham Branch May meeting and AGM
=================================

Our next meeting will be the Branch AGM on Monday 19 May 2007 followed by
"Fortran 1957 - 2008 : A Language with a Past, Present and Future" -
Peter Crouch, Chairman of BCS Fortran Specialist Group, at Trophy Suite,
Tally Ho Sports & Conference Centre, Pershore Road, Birmingham B5 7RN.
AGM at 6.30pm, presentation at 7pm.
Booking is requested, please contact Walter Milner, w.w.milner at bham.ac.uk.
See below and http://birmingham.bcs.org/fortran.htm for more information
on the meeting.

The meeting is open to BCS members and non-members alike. As non-BCS
members are very welcome to attend our meetings, please feel free to
pass this information on to friends and colleagues who you feel might be
interested. Non-members can continue with the buffet while the brief AGM
takes place.

There will be a free buffet available from 6pm; booking is requested,
please contact Walter Milner, w.w.milner at bham.ac.uk, if you intend to be
present. If you want to socialise and network after the official end of
the meeting we will be able to use the Tally Ho Lounge Bar, which is
open till 10:30pm, although there may be some noise from the TV!

=======================================================================
"Fortran 1957 - 2008 : A Language with a Past, Present and Future"
Peter Crouch, Chairman of BCS Fortran Specialist Group
Monday 19 May 2007 - 6 for 6.30pm
Trophy Suite, Tally Ho Sports & Conference Centre, Pershore Road,
Birmingham B5 7RN
Branch AGM at 6.30pm, presentation at 7pm.

This presentation is aimed to convince the audience that, as the title
says, Fortran is a language with a past, a present and a future. Since
becoming Chairman of the Fortran SG in 2002 Peter has made it his
mission to show that Fortran is not locked in the "dark ages" of punched
cards, paper tape and room sized mainframes but can be used to write
modern applications running on platforms ranging from supercomputers to
home PCs or Macs.

He will outline the development of Fortran, the name derived from
Formula Translation, as a language for numerical and scientific
computation and the first high level programming language, leading up to
its first release by IBM in 1957 and some early applications,
illustrated by two short films produced by IBM in 1958 and 1982 and some
anecdotes.

He will also describe the continued development of the language and its
standardisation, again the first for a programming language, beginning
in the 1960s and continuing to the present day.

He will show how Fortran is behind things we take for granted every day
and how you can try modern Fortran for yourself using free and open
source tools and exercise the modern features which have been introduced
into the language in recent years, including object orientation. He
will also provide a preview of the features to be included in the next
revision of the international standard due out in 2009-10.

See www.fortran.bcs.org for information on the BCS Fortran Specialist
Group and the development of Fortran.

A free buffet will available from 6pm. Please contact Walter Milner,
w.w.milner at bham.ac.uk, if you intend to be present, so we can plan the
amount of food and drink for the buffet.
