Lucene is highly reccomended, i've been using the Java version for many 
years. There is a full PHP (no java required) port of the lucene backend, 
it's been integrated into Moodle for about 12-18 months now, it seems to 
work very nicely. It's also part of the Zend framework, but i've not used 
it in this context (see http://framework.zend.com/manual/en/zend.search.lucene.html).
