Fortran is alive and well, the latest version of the ISO standard,
ISO/IEC 1539, is due to be finalised later this year!

Your daily weather forecast is based on calculations made in Fortran on
supercomputers down at the Met Office in Exeter. Fortran is also used
today by astronomer and at NASA as well as in oil exploration and for
investigating climate change.

2007 saw the 50th anniversary of the release of the first Fortran
compiler by IBM, see http://www.fortran.bcs.org/2007/jubileevents.php
for details of some of the celebratory events.

Best wishes,

Peter Crouch
Chairman
British Computer Society
Fortran Specialist Group
(occasional PHP developer too!)
