Yes I would accept that argument, but the likely visitor to the site I am 
concerned with may not be up to date with their mobile, so I have to take that 
into account. Some of my nearest and dearest still have old phones, but they are 
happy with them!

I'd argue that if you need to do this, your main site is wrong. All but the 
oldest of phones can render HTML + CSS. You can just use CSS or similar to 
reformat the site for a mobile device
