Hi There

This is a belated response to Matthew Atkinsons
questions in November about Linux on a laptop.

If you can stretch the budget a bit further, and if
you haven't already bought a laptop, on
www.auctions.compaq.co.uk you can usually pick up a
discontinued model laptop for somewhere between £900
to £1000.
These are brand new machines that come with full
manufacturers warranty.

Earlier this year I bought a Compaq Armada M700 for
£935 IIRC. This is (was?) a nicely specced machine:
850 MHz Pentium III, 256 Meg Ram. 14.1 inch screen.
Onboard 100 Meg ethernet, USB, winmodem etc. But no
FireWire though.
It comes with a 3 year 2-day-pick-up-and-return
warranty.
It runs Linux perfectly. XWindows works, USB works,
network works, soundcard works. Even the win-modem
works once you download the driver. Suspend seems to
work almost perfectly now (It used to be a bit flakey,
but after upgrading to Suse 8.1, it seems much more
reliable).

Hope I'm not too late.

Regards
Kevin
