[Preston] optimizing X11/Video performance for DVD playback

Hi all

I eventually found the time to buy a DVD drive and install ogle for DVD
playback, however I can only seem to get a frame rate of 18 frames per
second, which does look a bit jerky (bit like "super 8 home movie at times)
.Is it possible to improve system performance?

My system is a duron 750 MHz with 128Meg of ram, the video card is a rage128
with 32Meg of vid memory. I have installed the R128 drivers which give the
XVideo extensions. Ive also been into the BIOS and set AGP to x4 and switched
on the fast write mode (although I'm not really sure what difference these
make but they do sound as if they might improve performace) (operating system
is RH7.2 with X11 4.1.0)

When i look at system performance the play back software is using about 40%
of CPU time and X is using between 50 and 60% of CPU time, so there is almost
no processing time so spare.

Would reducing the screen resolution or number of colors improve things
significantly. The brute force solution would seem to be to buy a faster
processor but this seems a bit over the top when a DVD FAQ I read suggests
that a 350MHz Pentium should be adequate for play back

all suggestions gratefully received
