There is also the format parameter you can pass to dpkg-query.  For
example, you could show the status of all packages with their long names
by doing:

dpkg-query -W --showformat='${status} ${Package}\n' 

This requires a newer version of the dpkg package than is in Woody.

Hope this helps/is of interest.

BTW, I dunno how good kpackage is but you might like to try synaptic too
because it has (in Sarge/Sid) just undergone a major overhaul and is
even easier and more logical to use than it was before (all IMHO, of
course).
