Whilst Richard's instructions are prefectly valid, you might want to try
the xf86cfg program before getting into the nuts and bolt of the X
config file.

I don't know for sure that this program is included with RH 9 (I use
Debian), but it's worth a try if you're feeling intimidated by vi and
config files. ;-) If you don't have it, Richards instructions should
work under any circumstances.

(To paraphrase Richard)
Hold down the Ctrl and Alt keys and simultaneously press
one of the function keys from F1 to F2.

After a second or two you will be at a terminal login screen, type root
and enter, then the root (admin) password and enter.

Then try this command:

xf86cfg -textmode

This is a program that will let you edit an existing XF86Config-4 file
interactively, and save it. It works under X for re-configurations, but
we are telling it to run in the basic "textmode". You need the
"configure monitor" choice from the menu. In theory, this section is the
only thing you need to change. When you have picked a setting that suits
you and saved the file, try logging out as root (type "exit") and log in
as a normal user and type:

startx

Hope this helps!
