Yes, you can run Linux on PPC.

Problems:

There is no non-destructive repartioner for HFS. A reformat and reinstall of 
OS X will be required.

If you have a powerbook there are no drivers for (I believe) the 802.11g 
hardware or the Blueetooth hardware.

KDE has a single button mouse mode, but your favourite WM may not.

Good things:

Using MacOnLinux you can run a Linux desktop with any number of OS X and/or OS 
9 desktops open at full tilt.

You can turn the trackpad speed up which fixes the horribly unresponsive 
powerbook/ibook trackpads.

I would check out YDL, they are an Apple authorised reseller and have lots of 
experience with Mac hardaware and Linux. Somewhere on their site there is a 
database of what works and what doesn't.
