I install 'vlc' or 'mplayer' - both play every possible format under
the sun (At least any format I've ever been able to find that's a film
etc).

I presume this is the same USB network stick thing as you mentioned at
our meeting? Unfortunately there aren't many 'good' USB wireless
adaptors out there :-/
I bought a wireless USB adaptor from the LinuxEmporium who guarantee that
their stuff works (apparently) but I couldn't get it working
(after spending more than a few hours :( )

I /personally/ feel you may be better off with e.g. a Netbook type
thing (i.e. it comes running a web browser / .wireless etc all work)
or a computer that's preloaded.
There was a recent article on LWN.net mentioning how Linux supports
more hardware than any other O/S; annoyingly my DNS issues seem to
stop me from finding a work-able URL.
If you get bored, or have too much time on your hands, try :
- Slackware
- FreeBSD
- OpenBSD
- NetBSD
:)
(I say those in jest, as the last 3 aren't Linux-es)
David.
(Now I just need to figure out why my DNS goes titsup in the late
evening... is it a conspiracy by my wife to make me go to bed before
22:00?)
