Oh dear! *sigh*
I do hope we're not going to get into another flame war.
Isn't it strange that the only time there's a flurry of activity on
mailman it's because there's a suggestion to move away from using it?
No-one's forcing anyone to unsubscribe from mailman or stopping them
from using it if they so wish, but in the time I've been a member I've
seen precious little discussion about Linux, it's use at home or in the
workplace, the merits of one distro compared with another, how to
resolve problems etc. Those of us who have met over the past few months
have been exploring ways of increasing the group's profile/exposure so
that people in the Redditch and Bromsgrove area who may have heard of
Linux and be curious about it can come along to a meeting and see at
first hand what it's like - something you can't do relying solely on a
mailing list. In other words, we've tried to take things a step further
than (figuratively) hanging around on mailman waiting for something
interesting to happen!
I think it's safe to say to say that as users of Linux, we're advocates
of freedom - of choice and expression. I shall remain subscribed to the
mailman list, though I won't hold my breath that there'll be much
activity! I shall also attend meetings as and when I can, because I
choose to do so and because I'd like to help people realise there's more
to home computing than Microsoft and Apple.
I'd encourage anyone who can to come along to the Washford Mill on the
2nd, not to chew chunks out of each other, but to discuss how we might
develop the group. If you think that the direction the group is taking
is not for you, then that's quite alright. We'll leave you to watch the
tumbleweed on mailman!
By the way, that last comment was meant to be _humourous_ :-) <-
See! I've even added a smiley to emphasise the point.
Paul
