Thanks folks for your replies, but this is now fixed thanks to the solution from Martin.
BTW: The zenbook does not have a number keypad, so the ALT 1 2 4 does not work.

Thanks, Martin. On my keyboard, there is an alt key on both the left and the right of the space bar. The LH one does not not do anything, but the RH gives me the |. Thanks. jack

On my Netbook it is AltGR Key ( right of space bar ) + the key below Esc  | |
