Or a problem with the cable, I'd forgotten that there was a crossover
adapter there when the cable was being used for eth0 which was still on
eth0 (networking for idiots it is..[1]). So I now have a crossover cable on
eth1 but it now doesn't work differently :-)
eth1 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:08:A1:60:8E:1D
inet addr:192.168.0.53 Bcast:192.168.0.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
inet6 addr: fe80::208:a1ff:fe60:8e1d/64 Scope:Link
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:39 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:124 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
RX bytes:3060 (2.9 Kb) TX bytes:9858 (9.6 Kb)
Interrupt:5 Base address:0xd800
Any clues?

[1] wasn't someone trying to get rid of a router?
