[SC.LUG] USB DSL Modems

I currently connect my windows laptop to the interweb using Tiscali broadband,
with a Sagem USB DSL modem.

I have heard muttering here and there over the last few months that these modems
are cruddy for various security and speed reasons. As I am going to be equipping
myself with a desktop machine running linux [

was wondering what the best way to connect to broandband would be:

 - Can I use the USB DSL thing with linux?
 - What are the alternatives?

Any pointers would be most gratefully received.
