[SC.LUG] Distro Upgrades & Re-installation

Hello everyone,


Hope you had an enjoyable easter.

I'm having a 'distro day' today, installing a dozen or so different 
distros to find which ones really grab me.

Having upgraded from Ubuntu 7.04 to 7.10 without any re-installation or 
re-configuration required (I found this impressive), I learn from Linux 
Format magazine that this is possible with with all the .deb distros. 
The inference is that when you upgrade to the latest release with RPM 
distros (and others) it is necessary to completely re-install.

Is this accurate, or are there other distros that have this 
functionality? What's the situation with Gentoo, Slackware and the RPMs?
