Following up still further, for OpenOffice there is a book writer's template at
http://templates.services.openoffice.org/en/node/1577

http://code.google.com/p/writertools/ is another extension and in the zipped
download does have a WriterTemplate.oxt which contains two templates where one
is for generic articles and the other is for books.

Another is OxygenOffice http://sourceforge.net/projects/ooop/files/

More software to try is the Writer's World Maker at http://www.wwmkr.com/

Storybook at http://storybook.intertec.ch/joomla/

Kabikaboo at http://sourceforge.net/projects/kabikaboo/

Or for that distraction free feel you can use PyRoom at http://pyroom.org/
