Hi,

This is the output from /var/log/messages from an attempt to connect early
this evening.

up
 Dec  2 17:13:37 localhost pppd[1411]: Modem hangup
 Dec  2 17:13:37 localhost pppd[1411]: Connection terminated.
 Dec  2 17:13:37 localhost /etc/hotplug/net.agent: NET unregister event not
supported
 Dec  2 17:13:38 localhost pppd[1411]: Exit.

Does this make any sense to you?

Apart from installing Mandrake 9 the system is unchanged.
